Finally! Writers, several of you have been asking for support in writing nonfiction books that teach, guide, help, or heal. As you may know, prescriptive or informative non-fiction are favorite genres for me. Well, guess what? We’re launching our new six-week deep-dive to get you started writing your how-to, self-help, or this-is-what-it-is book in FEBRUARY!!
There are a lot of good reasons to write a non-fiction book. Here are a few I’ve heard from you:
- You have specialized knowledge of something you’d like to consolidate and get out into the world.
- You know your expertise can make a difference in people’s lives.
- You need a book you can use to create credibility for your coaching or consulting business.
Writing a book based on your knowledge of your field of specialization is a great way to organize the work you’ve done over the years in your field and to offer that work to those who need it in a concise and cogent form. But figuring out how to structure both your material and your writing life can be less than straightforward at first glance.
I’ve created an online six-week deep-dive course to give you the tools you need to get started on writing the book you have in your heart to bring to life. This course will take place on six consecutive Fridays at 10am Pacific Time starting in February, 2020. We’ll use the Zoom platform and will record all classes so you can watch them later should you need to miss the live meetings. Handouts, templates, and class notes will also be provided.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
- The different micro-genres of non-fiction and how to know what KIND of book you want to write.
- Creating a chapter by chapter plan that will serve as the best scaffolding for your particular material and will keep you on track as you write.
- The different possible elements of a chapter and which ones are best for YOUR material.
- How to structure your writing life so that you actually get the book DONE.
- How to handle client stories ethically.
- Pros and cons of different publishing options.
- How to write a book proposal and look for a publisher.
- Overview of what an “author’s platform” is and why you need one even though you are an expert in your field.
If this sounds like just what you need, consider jumping in! Your book deserves to be written and the people you serve deserve to have it in their hands as a resource ASAP.

Hi Cami,
This looks great. I started jotting down some ideas about suicide awareness for possible workshops but I’m not sure that I have enough material for a book. Any thoughts?
Thanks
cheryl
Cheryl, do you have about six ideas you could work with? For example: 1. Suicide is on the rise and why. 2. Why we should all care about other people’s mental health. 3. How suicide changes the landscape of a family. Etc. If you do, you probably have enough material. I’ll be teaching the different sections of a self-help chapter so you’ll see you probably have more material than you think.
With a doing OK 104 year old mother, a doing OK post 2 strokes husband, a mediation/conflict resolution/communication practice and a spiritual teaching practice, I’m not sure this is the time for me to join. However, I’ve been writing on and off all my life and receiving comments such as “This sounds exactly like you,” “You have to write a book,” and most recently from a writing daughter, “You have more than enough material to write a book.” Also, I realize that putting a book out there can be the start of a platform. Perhaps ust noodling here for a person and others who I feel and know get it. P.S. I do “know” 2020 is another transitional year for me…in ways unknowable, some non-preferred, some exciting and beautiful. P.P.S. Center4Joy is but a 2nd FB page for now.
